In late April 2002, Pittsfield Charter Township completed the purchase of 535 acres of new parkland, located north of Michigan Ave., and bounded by Morgan, Marton, and Platt Road. This township acquisition, historic in both its size and richness of natural features, straddles two watersheds--the Huron River, and the Saline River, a tributary of the River Raisin. The park holds a Great Blue Heron colony of over 40 nests, a buttonbush swamp harboring threatened species, and numerous small wetlands, woods and meadows. The new parkland surrounds the township's previously acquired P.G. Palmer Park, 39 acres of woodland, wetlands, and open field, and the Morgan Road pump station, on 20 acres of mature woods. The Park Commission is working to create a master plan for the new park, incorporating trails and nature observation, and facilities for active recreation.
Only an abandoned gravel quarry a short time ago, this new park provides sweeping vistas, two lakes, accessible nature trails, a fishing dock, wildlife observation, forest management education, and much more. The 124-acre facility, located just south of I- 94 at Platt Road and Ellsworth Road, provides a great variety of recreational choices. Funded in part by three DNR grants, the park contains 2.5 miles of trails, and facilities for picnicking and soccer.
Located north of Ellsworth Road and just east of Carpenter, this 52 acre park is home to adult softball leagues and tournaments, summer day camp, pre-school and grade- school nature and activities programs, cross-country skiing, annual picnics, nature interpretive walks, and many other family and community events. The park contains two softball fields, 4 tennis courts, accessible pathways, a pavilion, play structures, outdoor grills, a sledding area, and a 17-acre wood sheltering 1 ¼ miles of Paint Creek, a tributary of Stony Creek.
Next to the township's Community Center building at 701 W. Ellsworth Road, at the intersection with State St., this 7-acre park has a pavilion with an accessible pathway, 1 softball field, 3 t-ball fields, a playground, and picnic tables and grills. The park hosts the popular youth t-ball program, softball practices, summer day camp, pre-school programs, a new adult kickball league, and many special programs for all ages.
